Abstract
Light pollution is becoming an increasingly significant environmental issue, with considerable impacts on ecosystems, human health, and astronomical research. This paper examines light pollution in the city of Velika Gorica, focusing on selected locations to analyse and understand the extent and significance of the problem at the local level. The paper defines the concept of light pollution, analyses the state and intensity of public lighting at selected locations in Velika Gorica, and compares the measured values with the legal framework. Based on the measurement results at these locations, measures to reduce light pollution are proposed. The hypotheses have been confirmed, as the study shows that lighting at most selected measurement points is at a satisfactory level; however, the measured values at several locations (Eurospin and Poštanska Street) are well above the permissible limits according to the classification of lighting zones and legal provisions on maximum lighting levels. Furthermore, measurements, observations, and secondary data (especially satellite images and citizens' opinions) indicate the intrusion of additional light sources from the area of the city of Zagreb. According to the results of the lighting measurements at the selected points, it is possible to reduce total light pollution in the area of Velika Gorica.
